Bachelor in Media Studies at University of Groningen
In 2020 I finished high school at German Goethe College, in Bucharest, Romania, and decided to move to Groningen, Netherlands to do a bachelor in media studies.
It was the first time I ever lived alone, as I moved out of my parents house at 18. I lived the first year in a student house, Winschoterdiep, where I met so many interesting people from all around the world. We built a community there and we were always there to support one another, as at the time the second covid lockdown was enforced.
First and most of the second year of university was spend online, but I chose to remain in Groningen and not go back home, as I was trying to make a new life there.
Media play a crucial role in shaping communication and organizing societies—culturally, politically, and economically. I learned how different media platforms are structured and operate, their political and economic foundations, and how media use, production, and content evolve, how to apply various research methods and gain insights into media-related professions. I really enjoyed this bachelor, and not only did I learn a lot about media theories, I also has some practical work as well in some courses. However, I do wish that it would have been a bit more hands on, and a bit less theory.
In my third year, I opted to do a minor in philosophy for one semester. I always had a passion for philosophy, I think I get it from my father since he did his bachelor in this. We had courses about the history of philosophy, social and political philosophy, ethics, philosophy of science and logic.
I do believe that this bachelor has helped me to work at the internship this summer, at Jazz in the Park, and I am so grateful for it. It also opened the door for me to do a master at VUB in Belgium this fall.
I graduated last year in December (2023).
